Blackening and colouring – copper, brass, steel – components custom-built according to the designer's wishes

IsoProfil refines components using independently developed processes tailored to the aesthetic requirements of its customers. This includes very varied layer structures and conversions of base materials, including into oxide layers. Customers’ colour requirements are directly controlled, with colour measurement by Minolta. • Blackening (black oxide)
  • Colouring
  • Matting
  • Patination

These techniques are carried out in our SURFACELONGE competence centre at our Wuppertal site.

Available materials: bronze, brass, steel, iron, copper & tombac

For example, brass is converted by oxidation into copper oxide and zinc oxide. The oxide layer generated, which is matched to the base material, increases the corrosion resistance and also provides greater protection against external influences. However, a blackened component or profile not only fulfils functional requirements. Such ‘blackened’ surfaces also offer excellent possibilities in terms of design. The pièce de résistance is the ‘ArtSurMind’ impression, a tradition in presentations at art museums. Intarsia can also be realised here by means of inserted, partly cast structures. CNC grinding machines ensure that the colour and surface structure is maintained for medium and large series. The upstream roughness depths create unique effects under light spectra. You can request your own personal IsoProfil application consultant.

Materials that can be processed include brass, bronze, copper, tombac and iron.

These special techniques serve purely decorative purposes.

As an experienced manufacturer of components, including those made from profiles for medium to very high requirements, IsoProfil offers complete components for all applications – from trolley tubes and 48-volt battery housings to high-frequency technology.

Blackening and colouring – FAQ

The colour of stainless steel can be changed, for example, by special chemical or electrochemical processes. Various visual effects are possible.

Copper changes under the influence of air and moisture. It oxidises and weathers, and its colour changes from salmon red to green. A natural patina forms that makes the underlying metal extremely durable and weather-resistant. In architecture, this is often desired or even deliberately accelerated.
